Player of the Year is latest to sign for Galway

Galway United manager Tommy Dunne has secured the signature of current Player of the Year Ryan Connolly, who occupied a central role in Galway's promotion winning campaign and will act as vice captain in 2015.

"Ryan performed exceptionally well throughout the season,” Dunne said. “We're delighted he has committed, and we hope he can perform at a higher level again next year. It's a step up and everybody involved in the club knows we need to push on again. We're all looking forward to it.”

Galway teams for National Cross Country

Galway is sending strong contingents across all categories to the first of the 2014 National Cross Country events this Sunday at Dundalk IT.

At senior level, Galway men’s team will travel with hopes of a high team placing. Individually, Gary Thornton and Keith Fallon of GCH, are Galway’s best prospects, with Thornton tipped for a top 10 finish, while Fallon, competing in the u-23 category, is expected to be in contention for a high placing.

Galwegians will be looking to bounce back after suffering their first loss of the Ulster Bank League when Ballymena grabbed pole position of division 1b lost with a last-gasp penalty at Crowley Park on Saturday.

Played in poor conditions, both sides struggled to gain an early foothold, but after Galwegians missed an early penalty effort, the visitors began to assert themselves and were rewarded with a try from centre Paddy James in the 31st minute. Outhalf Ritchie McMaster landed the touchline conversion and a penalty when Wegians prop Paul McCreanor was yellow-carded for a creaking scrum to lead 10-0.
