Loughrea break-ins may be ‘dry runs,’ gardai suspect

Businesses in Loughrea are being warned by gardai to update security systems regularly as two break-ins in the past week could have been “dry runs” to test out alarms and other security features.
A spokesperson for Loughrea Garda Station said that alarms and phone lines were cut during burglaries at a garage in New Inn and at Loughrea Golf Club recently.

A Traveller family have been moved on from a halting site on the Headford road following the execution of an eviction notice for illegally parking a caravan. Another family have until next week to vacate the area and find alternative accommodation.

Until improvements are made to the “treacherous” Coolough road, the Galway City Council must put road safety signs in place as the safety of pedestrians using this road is “of paramount importance”.
This is the view of Cllr Terry O’Flaherty, who was this week informed that a Compulsory Purchase Order process for the lands at Crestwood has begun. The CPO is for the purpose of improvements to the Coolough road.

Two men were given a slap on the wrist and a fine for noisily bush drinking near a residential area, while people were getting up for work, and for being old enough to know better.
Michael Burke (21) with an address at 16 Claremont Park, Rahoon, appeared at Galway District Court last Monday charged with being intoxicated in a public place on August 20, 2008. His co-accused, Colm McDonagh (22) with an address at 60 The Baily, Circular Road, Galway, and who was charged with the same offence, did not appear in court.

More than 100 nurses staged a lunchtime demonstration outside University Hospital Galway on Monday in protest over the fact that a shorter working week - due to be put in place in June - has not been implemented at UHG and Merlin Park hospitals.
The nurses, all members of the Irish Nurses’ Organisation, are “angry” and “frustrated” that they are still working 39 hours instead of the new 37.5 working week which came about after the national nurses’ dispute of 2007.
