The deadline for entries for the Cúirt New Writing Prize 2011 is on Friday February 4 at 5pm and the Galway Arts Centre is encouraging people to send their entries in.

There was an increase of eight per cent in new buildings in Galway city and county in 2010, according to figures released by GeoDirectory.
GeoDirectory, a subsidiary of An Post working with Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi), manages the country’s only complete database of residential and commercial buildings. The figures were compiled nationwide by 5,600 An Post delivery staff working with experts from OSi.

The number of people signing on in Galway in December increased by 1.8 per cent, meaning the Live Register for Galway now stands at 23,099, up 408 from November.
These figures were published recently by the Central Statistics Office. According to Labour’s Galway West candidate councillor Derek Nolan, it shows the local economy is “still in decline”, despite the fact that the export sector is performing well.
