Galway Samaritans call on locals to volunteer

Galway Samaritans are asking people in Galway city and the surrounding county to consider becoming listening volunteers with the organisation. The number of calls received by the Galway branch increases every year and new volunteers from the local community are always needed to help sustain the service.

Seven month suspended sentence for selling cannabis

A man found in possession of nearly €800 worth of cannabis resin and who sold 10 grams a month to his friends received a seven month suspended sentence at Galway District Court this week.

Krzyaztos Betowski (29) with an address at 168 An Fiodan, Doughiska, appeared before Judge Mary Fahy charged with possession of cannabis herb with intent to sell or supply at his place of residence on March 19, 2010.

More than 520 people died through suicide in Ireland in 2009 — that is more than one person each day — and the numbers continue to increase. For the families and friends of the victim the impact is devastating. Each year, another 12,000 people have presented at hospital A&E departments having engaged in acts of deliberate self-harm or attempted suicide.More people die through suicide than on our roads. The budget to fund the Road Traffic Authority to reduce road traffic deaths is €40 million. The total Government budget for suicide prevention is only €5 million.

Public talk on the Protestant missions to Connemara

For nearly a century the Protestant denominations in Ireland set up missions in Connemara. Many were about winning converts, but others sought to help the communities they encountered.

Dr Miriam Moffitt will give a public lecture to The Galway Archaeological and Historical Society, entitled Protestant Missions in Connemara 1846 – 1937 in the Harbour Hotel, Dock Road, on Monday at 8pm.
