Man stole clothes to get ticket home

Clothes were stolen from a department stores by a man in a desperate bid to sell them to get enough money to get a ticket home, the Galway District Court heard this week.

The 36-year-old homeless Latvian national, who used pliers to remove security tags from the stolen clothing during one shop lifting incident, had also been caught on another occasion by gardai in possession of €1,000 worth of methylamphetamine, or street name crystal meth, with intent to sell or supply, and was sentenced to a total of 19 months when he appeared before Judge Mary Fahy at Monday’s court sitting.

The young Galway based musician Daithí Ó Drónaí uses his violin to play trad and left-field indie pop. Go Cúirting in the kitchen next week

In a new departure for the Cúirt International Festival of Literature, a number of readings will take place in the kitchens of Galway city homes.

The Kitchen Readings will see poet Yvonne Cullen read in two homes in the Westside area on the morning of Thursday April 14 and in the Westside Library on the afternoon of the same day. On Friday 15, Ms Cullen will read in two Ballybane homes in the morning and in Ballybane Library in the afternoon.
