Three people who experienced the devastation of meningitis highlight importance of support

Three Galway people who have experienced the devastation caused by meningitis have joined forces with Connacht rugby captain John Muldoon to highlight the importance of support following a diagnosis.

Siobhan Carroll’s four-year-old daughter, Aoibhe, died in April 2008, Macha Ní Bhrádaigh lost her 18-year-old sister Sadhbh to the condition in December 2009 while Liam Cullinane contracted meningitis in 1993 which affected his mobility and speech.

City museum to get major makeover

The Galway City Museum will be getting a floor-by-floor makeover of all its exhibition spaces, in advance of a major loan of artefacts from the National Museum of Ireland.

The museum will close to the public from this Saturday to allow for the redevelopment works and will re-open in early June to showcase a major exhibition on Galway from prehistoric to modern times.

Three year ban for man found walking away from crash

A Tuam man was given a three year disqualification from driving after he pleaded guilty to drink driving after he was found walking away from his van which he had crashed at the side of the road. Garda Michelle Nolan told the court that she was on patrol on September 15 2010 when she found a van crashed on the Ballindine Road outside of Claremorris. She went on to say that she found Christopher Lally of Abbeyknockmoy, Tuam, Co Galway walking on the road a short time later. Who admitted to her that he had been drinking, she arrested him and he provided a urine sample which returned a reading of 107 mlg per 100ml of urine. Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined Lally €500 and disqualified him from driving for three years

Man receives twenty one months for crime spree

A County Clare man who during a three-day spree of crime stole a vehicle during a burglary only to crash it into a wall, and had been found in possession of property taken during an “opportunistic” burglary at a city centre hostel, received a 21 month sentence at Galway District Court this week.
