Ballinrobe Racecourse is celebrating its 90th anniversary with a two day meeting on Monday and Tuesday. After a sterling crowd attended the opening meeting of the year, the course commitee will be eagerly anticipating another large attendance for the first two day meeting of the year. This fixture traditionally attracts a big crowd as the holiday season draws closer.
“This meeting is very popular. It attracts a lot of groups of people, many of which travel in buses from several regions. This year we hope will be no exception and already we’re practically booked up as far as the corporate hospitality is concerned, with the Corrib Restaurant booked out for both evenings. This all augurs well for another good meeting,” commented racecourse manager John Flannelly.

With much anticipation the doors will open to the public at 10am with admission free. The Galway event is part of Ireland’s largest one-day charity dress sale 'Buy My Dress' taking place in Galway, Cork, Dublin, Kerry, Mayo, Kilkenny, Wexford and Wicklow in aid of Down Syndrome Centre. Last year over 1,000 dresses were collected in Galway alone and hopes are high for a similarly successful event this time around.

Each year the partnership, in association with the Irish Sports Council, offers financial support to sports clubs and organisations which promote sport and recreation, and this year the fund has been boosted by a contribution from County Galway VEC.

A 39-year-old pregnant woman suffering from breast cancer had her surgery deferred at University Hospital Galway because her consultant could not get access to a operating theatre.
The woman, who is three months pregnant, had to wait a week for the operation. This is the latest in a series of incidents which have highlighted the effects of the health cutbacks, particularly the embargo on the recruitment of nurses.
