Marathon organisers donated thousands of euro to local athletes and clubs, despite claims by former mayor

Much has been written and broadcast over the past week on the impasse between the City Council and the organisers of the now-cancelled Galway City Marathon, which was due to take place at the end of this month and draw a vast number of runners to the the city. However, among the most hurtful barbs thrown was the allegation by former mayor Michael Crowe that the organisers did not honour a commitment to donate marathon funds to sporting clubs and athletes in the city which has been angrily rejected by the organisers and proven to be untrue.

Celebrity teams go head to head at the inaugural Ironman Ireland next month

Some of Ireland’s most popular celebrities will find themselves in unchartered water this September as they take part in the first IRONMAN IRELAND 70.3. Famous faces such as Today FM’s Ray D’Arcy and Jenny Kelly, singer Brian Kennedy, and TV presenters Gráinne Seoige and Katherine Thomas will all be seen participating in the IRONMAN 70.3 Team Relay. Roseanna Davidson and Keith Barry will also be in attendance to support the teams who all train at the same gym, Byrne Fitness in Dublin. Indeed Paul Byrne and Keith Duffy will both be competing on behalf of Irish Autism Action.

The team relay will be integrated into the IRONMAN 70.3 individual race which will see 2500 athletes taking part in a 1.9km swim in the crystal-clear waters of Galway Bay, followed by a challenging 90km cycle course, leading them out to the scenic Connemara region and back into Galway city where the competitors will take on a gruelling 21.1km run along a spectator-friendly route taking in the Spanish Arch with the finish line in Salthill Park.

Everyone can be a scientist for a day at NUI Galway

This one day celebration of science in inner and outer space is being organised by NUI Galway in collaboration with the Marine Institute and Galway Atlantaquaria, and is funded under the European Union’s Marie Curie Programme and Discover Science and Engineering.

NUI Galway offers Leaving Cert students a second chance with special maths exam

The College of Engineering and Informatics at NUI Galway has announced details of a special entrance maths examination which will give students a second chance to pursue a career in engineering. The exam, which takes place on Wednesday August 24, is for students who achieve the CAO points for an undergraduate engineering degree course at NUI Galway but who have not met the obligatory maths requirement.

In advance of this exam NUI Galway will hold an intensive preparatory course for applicants intending to sit the exam. This free course will run for five days, from Thursday August 18 to Tuesday August 23.
