We have all heard the problem stories this week with deals websites, and received the emails - sign up today for this one-off special offer and avail of an incredibly low-cost “special offer”… getting anything up to 60 per cent or 70 cent off a product or service… but have you read the small print? People are beginning to hear more and more horror stories and stories of rip-off offers that are making them think twice about that impulse purchase.

Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government Phil Hogan has launched a new campaign to remind everyone to “Bring Batteries Back”, a nationwide initiative to encourage more battery recycling in Ireland. WEEE Ireland, the compliance scheme responsible for WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and waste battery recycling will be facilitating the campaign through their network of battery collection boxes in retail outlets, recycling centres and other collection points throughout Galway city and county.

Tomorrow will see former Galway Mayor and Galway West TD Michael D Higgins become the ninth president of Ireland. It will be a proud day for everyone from the city and county he has called home for the last 50 years.
The lead up to the inauguration has led Insider to consider some of the values Michael D espouses; his idea that ‘The future is unwritten and we should never accept as inevitable anything that authority presents to us as so’; the need to renew the Republic; a politics based on citizenship and people first; and equality for all.

A Leaving Cert student who tragically lost her life when her vehicle collided with another in Portumna on Bank Holiday Monday is to be laid to rest today.
Seventeen-year-old Claire Prendergast from Dangan, Golden, in Tipperary, had been the front seat passenger in a Nissan Micra car, which also contained two other female occupants, when it collided with a Mercedes-Benz at Thornfield, Portumna, at around 11.25am on October 31 last.

For a county and city which has provided leaders in many spheres throughout its long and varied history, it is surprising that it is only next week that a Galway person will take his/her place in one of the key political roles in the country.
Never before have we had a Taoiseach or a President, unlike our neighbours in my own home county who have had several (including some with very tenuous connections).
