Residents ‘horrified’ at plans for new Tesco hypermarket

The residents’ response comes following a recent meeting called by businessman Micheál Ó hUiginn, where he presented draft plans for the proposed Tesco store on his former lumberyard.

Councillors attempt to block proposed halting site

Serious questions were raised at Monday’s city council meeting to have land in Ballindooley listed as a heritage site, which some councillors suspected was a means to block a proposed Traveller halting site for the area.

The 1.11 acre site contains a 1950s bungalow, a hay shed, two barns, and a farmer’s cottage that is currently being used as a shed. A famine cottage is also located on the edge of the site.

The annual Christmas Day Swim in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland project Voices for Galway is taking place again this year. “Voices for Galway” is a local charity dedicated to the provision of speech and language therapy to children with Down Syndrome in the Galway community.

This is the charity’s seventh year to hold the swim – you do not have to be a swimmer to participate, just be willing to get into the sea and get yourself wet on Christmas morning is what it iss all about.

Child abuse claims against eighteen priests in Tuam archdiocese, audit reveals

Allegations of child sexual abuse were made against 18 priests in the Tuam archdiocese from 1975 to 2011, according to the Review of Safeguarding Practice in the archdiocese, just published. Ten of these priests were deceased when the review was undertaken in June 2011.
