The effects of Budget 2012 on rural Ireland will be the subject of a public meeting in Gullane’s Hotel, Ballinasloe, this Monday.

The meeting will be held by Fianna Fáil deputy leader Éamon Ó Cuív, who has described the Budget as containing “anti-rural measures”, and he is encouraging the public to attend.

A man looking for divine intervention in his search for work was fined at Galway District Court this week for obstructing passers by with a picture of Jesus.

Sebestian Stancu (32) with an address at 27 Scholar’s Walk, Lusk village, Fingal, Co Dublin, appeared before Judge Mary Fahy on Monday and pleaded guilty to obstructing the passage of persons or vehicles, contrary to Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 2011, at Whitehall, Abbeygate Street, on August 5, 2011.

More than 1,300 homes test for radon in Galway in the past two months

The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII) is again urging the people of Galway to test their homes for radon, a radioactive gas which is linked to up to 200 lung cancer deaths each year in Ireland.

More than 1,300 homeowners have undertaken the radon test since the beginning of October this year following an intensive awareness campaign of the dangers of exposure to the radioactive gas. These are in addition to the 5,630 homes previously tested by the RPII in the county. However, the total number tested to date is only a small fraction of the 78,000 occupied homes in Galway.
