Volvo to triple electric car production capacity

Volvo Cars is tripling electric car manufacturing capacity at its plant in Belgium to meet fast growing demand for its Recharge line-up of chargeable cars.

The share of Recharge cars as a percentage of its total sales more than doubled in 2020 compared to 2019, Volvo says. By 2022, electric car capacity at the Belgian plant will have more than tripled from today’s levels and will amount to some 60 per cent of the plant’s total production capacity, the Swedish car maker tells us.

New agreement for exchange of UK driving licences

Minister for Transport Eamonn Ryan has signed an agreement with the United Kingdom that will allow the holders of UK licences resident here to exchange them for an Irish licence.

The mechanism that has allowed for the recognition and exchange of UK licences for an Irish one expired on December 31, 2020. The agreement signed by Minister Ryan means persons resident in Ireland with a UK licence will be able to continue to swap their licences for Irish licences. It will also allow anyone who has not exchanged their UK licence in time, before the December 31 deadline, to exchange it under this new agreement.

New car sales down twenty-five per cent in 2020

Total new car registrations for 2020 finished at 88,324, a 25 per cent decrease on 2019 (117,109).

According to figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, 79,969 imported used cars were registered last year, which is a decrease of 29.8 per cent on 2019 (113,926).

Gardaí Christmas clampdown targets drug/drink driving

An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority (RSA)'s annual Christmas and New Year Road Safety campaign will primarily focus on mandatory intoxicant testing – detecting those who drive having consumed alcohol or drugs.

The campaign commenced last weekend, during which gardaí say it detected 26 people driving under the influence of drugs and 85 driving under the influence of alcohol.
