New research reveals the high cost of learning to drive is making driving less accessible for young people.

The key findings of the latest survey by Carzone tells us that 66 per cent of 17–24-year-olds admit they are not learning to drive as they do not have the means to pay for the mandatory 12 driving lessons.

Current Car — David Leahy is the Chief Executive Officer of the Galway Roscommon Education and Training Board. Fitting for the former history teacher, his driving past is varied and interesting. Currently the owner of an Audi A6, his first car was actually a van. Remembered by David as ‘a great little servant’, the 1991 Toyota Starlet, transported David from Trinity College to his lodgings saving him the twenty mile daily cycle.The Starlet saw him through the naughties, and was replaced by a series of cars, including a Nissan Almera, Saab 95 and a much loved Land Rover Defender.

Under inflated tyres could be costing businesses €4,000 a year

A vehicle with under inflated tyres could cost owners up to €17 per month in fuel costs and €4,000 per annum for a fleet of 20 company vehicles.

That’s according to calculations carried out by the Irish Tyre Industry Association (ITIA), who says in addition to fuel efficiency, under inflation of tyres can also negatively impact grip handling and braking performance, increasing the risk of a crash, as well as the wear and lifespan of the tyre.

Garda issue advice to drivers over dark winter period

An Garda Síochána is issuing an urgent road safety appeal to all road users ahead of the busy winter driving period, as provisional figures show that 123 lives have been lost on Ireland’s roads to date. This is twelve more deaths than during the same period in both 2021 and 2019.

Garda are therefore targeting locations that our analysis has shown the major risk of fatal collisions or those that cause serious injury.
