People of the Tribes : Colm & Caryl Mc Donagh

Tue, Jun 20, 2017

''I'm son of a Carna man and from Renmore. Originally my life was in the travel business. I set up Colm Mc Donagh travel in 1989 down in Woodquay and One Stop Travel here on Eyre Square. I spent a lot of years in the travel business and things were moving in a different direction, along with our lease so it was a case of a decision being made for us. Do we take out a lease for another 15 years? Was there enough business in the travel industry or go a new direction?...And so we did! My wife Caryl who worked with me in the travel business is a qualified chef and we always wanted to open up a little coffee shop. The opportunity presented itself and we grabbed it with both hands, now we have a 25 year lease and teamed up with an amazing brand - Esquire Coffee. Its all about bringing the business to you, having a quality service, helping people out in times of need and not being afraid to roll up the sleeves! Galway has gotten way more cosmopolitan, the coffee culture is now like the pub culture sure. I love galway with all my heart, I couldn't live or work anywhere else in the world.''

I always wanted to follow my heart in life. It was just one of those things. I studied biochemistry and then psychology, but something was missing. I loved what I did, but I wasn't in love with it. I suppose, one day I just said to myself, if you are going to really find your thing, you better do it now. Time is moving along. I just did it. I don't know why, but I switched on the laptop and wrote a children's book.

People of the Tribes : Meet Brian

Thu, Apr 13, 2017

"I graduated from NUIG in the middle of the recession in 2011 and was having no luck with jobs. I developed an anxiety disorder and just lost all confidence in myself, which has been a pretty common theme for the young Irish over the last couple of years, especially for guys. I was feeling lost and decided the only way I could change the route my life was taking, was to start running full sprint at every fear I had, to regain that confidence. After completing my Master's in UL, I was offered a job in Malaysia. The idea of moving to a country on the other side of the world, leaving the safety net of home and family behind was terrifying, so I ran at it. It was the best decision I ever made. I was given opportunities I would never have been afforded in Ireland. I was promoted to Research & Development Team Leader in my company within a year. I was nominated, quite embarrassingly, as CLEO's Most Eligible Bachelor in Malaysia, which I only agreed to because it scared me. Life was fun over there and I got comfortable, but in late 2015 one of my best friends died in a car crash in Kuala Lumpur and it threw me of-course again. The anxiety and depression came back in force and it made me question whether my job in the Oil & Gas industry was really what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, so I quit and began developing my own business and moved back to Ireland. I created a YouTube channel called “Real Engineering", where I teach the science and history behind engineering. I somehow managed to grow the channel into a legitimate business in just 6 months and now have 450,000 subscribers and average about 2 million views per month.”

People of the Tribes : Meet Malgosia, Wojtek & Blanka

Fri, Mar 24, 2017

“We met 12 years ago, when I came to Ireland on holidays. After going back to Poland he was calling, texting and annoying me, so we met in France a month later and that's when it all started. I quit my job, packed my bags and moved over to Galway. Two years later we got married in Clarinbridge and had an amazing wedding party in O'Connors Bar in Salthill. Galway became our home and we couldn’t imagine a better place to have a family. In 2008, Blanka was born. We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary recently and we feel that each of us grew so much as we always pushed one another to do and achieve more in our lives. We always respected each other for who we are and gave each other strength to be true to ourselves when others thought otherwise. Marriage requires love, respect & patience. There are two people in a relationship and both are equally needed for it to succeed.”
