Another treat for Galway with third Papa Rich

Thu, Nov 02, 2017

Ireland has gone street food crazy with plenty of quality operations in food trucks and stalls in the most unlikely places such as industrial estates and business parks as well as markets and events. From farmers looking for a new market for their produce to budding chefs and restaurateurs squeezed out by high rents, there are talented people involved and the food they offer is going down a treat. Standards are more than a match for the best permanent restaurants and the best of them soon graduate to bricks and mortar premises of their own with the advantage of a ready built following, so it looks as if this trend is here to stay.

Sushi in the sky

Thu, Oct 26, 2017

A quarter of a century ago, in the nineties, Ireland was far from being a multicultural society and ‘ethnic’ in restaurant terms almost always meant a Chinese. It is a completely different story today, we have a bewildering choice of world cuisines, including many far better Asian offerings than before. One cuisine that was slow to establish was Japanese, initially the arrival of Wagamama caused some excitement in Dublin back in 1998, and, although sushi bars are now popular both here and in the capital, the idea of dining out on almost exclusively cold food remains strange to many Irish people.

Gill’s Bar and Restaurant, Athenry

Thu, Oct 19, 2017

Ireland has many great pubs but in general, especially outside the cities, we do not have great pub food. It is one of the challenges that needs to be addressed as we hone our emerging Irish food culture. Our pubs are a huge draw for visitors from abroad, but the food on offer inside is often substandard. Gill's Bar and Restaurant in Athenry bucks this trend, it is an establishment with a gastropub sensibility, proper craft beers on offer, and more than decent food.

Evergreen Healthfoods

Fri, Oct 06, 2017

Everyone has a few favourite independent stores in Galway that just make shopping so much more enjoyable. They might include some independent clothes shops, cafes, restaurants, butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers, or bookshops, the city is full of them. There is a knowledge, expertise, and friendly banter in these stores that you do not get in the big chains. One of these shops that makes shopping in Galway such a pleasure is undoubtedly Evergreen.

While a health food shop is basically a grocery store that primarily sells health foods, organic foods, local produce, and nutritional supplements, they typically offer customers a wider and more specialised selection of foods than conventional stores, maybe people with special dietary needs, such as those with allergies and for people who observe vegetarian, vegan, raw food, organic, and other alternative diets, or athletes and bodybuilders. The term health food has been used since the 1920s to refer to specific foods claimed to be especially beneficial to health, although the term has no official definition. Some terms that are associated with health food are macrobiotics, natural foods, organic foods, and whole foods. Macrobiotic is a diet focusing primarily on whole cereals; these, along with other whole foods, are foods that are minimally processed. Whole cereals have their fibre, germ, and hull intact and are considered more nutritious. Natural foods are simply foods that contain no artificial ingredients. Organic foods are foods that are grown without the use of conventional and artificial pesticides and must meet strict organic standards.
