For me, it all started with a tuna sandwich. There was a time (pre-mortgage and pre-children) that I lived just round the corner from Anton's and was as comfortable there as in my own dining room. Anton's has been deservedly rewarded with many years of success on Father Griffin Road. Simple food and excellent value for money explains why it has so many regular customers, and has been part of the neighbourhood's life for so long. It is a mighty achievement for a modestly sized restaurant that is always busy and bustling. This little cafe is big on taste. The formula is simple and has stood the test of time, unpretentious and uncomplicated cooking that has charmed customers year after year.
The café has a pretty outdoor seating section, while inside the walls are painted in restful colours and often hung with local artists' exhibitions — a lovely space with character and energy. You will find a blend of bohemian types, students, and suited and booted business people. It has long been a Galway favourite for a healthy breakfast of scrambled eggs, buttermilk pancakes, or granola with yoghurt. The emphasis is on fuelling up rather than frying up. It is very popular also for a mid-morning catch up over coffee and cake with scones, muffins, and indulgent homemade desserts made fresh daily.

Now that the dust is settling from all that back-to-school excitement, the reality sets in. Every year it's the same old story — we start off with enthusiasm only to be left defeated by day three when what was lovingly packed earlier comes home intact again. If back to school wasn't bad enough with sorting uniforms, books, the dreaded gum shields, we also have to make sure they have a lunchbox filled with food they will actually eat that will keep them going until they get home. Before you reach for the old reliable 'hang sangwidge' and 'cheese strings', here's a suggestion that might make this morning chore a little easier.

Watching trends in the accommodation sector in Ireland is always interesting. Recently we have seen a number of high profile four and five star hotels engage in multi-million euro refurbishment programmes, essential work if we are to compete with the rest of the world. However, there are still many establishments that have been short on the maintenance and refurbishment front for a number of years. As prices rise again customers are not always seeing an equal increase in standards. While hotels undoubtedly benefit from investment, as salubrious as these premises may become, they will ultimately fail to impress unless the standards of staff, service, and food matches and complements the surroundings.

We are programmed to just buy and not even think about what it is that we are buying. A new grocery experience here in Galway is aiming to change all that, and a visit to The Filling Station on Abbeygate Street certainly is a bit of an eye opener. The concept is simple — the store offers you the opportunity to significantly decrease your consumption of single use plastics by bringing your own container or bag. The shop has a range of foodstuffs and household products — just go in, fill, weigh, and pay.
After a slow start, the zero waste movement is growing quickly in Ireland with more and more consumers saying “no” to packaging. They bring their own empty containers and leave the shop, having filled up with the goods they need. Owner John Tedders is one of the many grocers around the country tapping into, and facilitating, the idea that a consumer can shop without incurring any waste.
