Thu, Sep 01, 2016
The Cellar has existed as a bar since the seventies when pubs were mostly for drinking in, and it was a more Bohemian place entirely then, a hotbed of music with Irish artists such as Mickey Finn and Frankie Gavin regularly playing there. It has changed hands a few times since then, in recent years becoming well known also as a casual restaurant which closed down at the end of 2010. It was not destined to stay closed for long and reopened in its current reincarnation in April 2011.
I have a soft spot for The Cellar Bar, and I doubt that I am the only one. I have been there during the last two refurbishments, seeing its transformation from a dingy watering hole to a modern venue offering good value food and lively nightlife. There can be few people who spent time in college in Galway in recent years who have not had the ‘all day breakfast’ at least once. The location makes it a great city centre meeting spot for lunch or for after-work drinks. And of course, most importantly, the food is that rare combination of good and fast.

The burger bandwagon rolls on and on. We have seen the rise and fall of hot dogs, ribs, and burritos, but the popularity of burgers never seems to die. While we have compiled our own lists of where is best in Galway for fish and chips (Hooked), the best sandwich (Entrepans), pizza, fries, coffee, and more, for a long time even though almost every menu in town has a burger listed on it, there is none that really stands out from the crowd.

Abbeygate Street has been transformed in the last couple of years from a down at heel shortcut to a bustling community of small cafes, restaurants, and shops. There are now so many places to choose from that this diversion from the main drag has become a hub of good food in Galway. The turn of fortune for this address can be directly linked to The Dough Bros taking up residence here, causing a huge increase in footfall. With their queue regularly streaming out the door, the many empty shopfronts were soon filled with a variety of diverse eateries to take up the slack and join the dots between the existing eclectic retailers, giving the area a new lease of life and identity.

No, not that Dáil Bar, where politicians run up huge tabs after controversial late-night sittings. The other one, on the corner of Cross Street and Middle Street. Although it has the same name as the bar in Ireland's house of parliament, ('Dáil' translates from Irish as a place where people meet to discuss, debate, and talk), our Dáil is much better craic. Over the years, the building has been a family home, a toy shop, and most recently a licensed premises known as Tí na nÓg. Since 2008, the pub is in common ownership with The Front Door, Tom Sheridans, and Brasserie on The Corner, and as such has a higher standard than most others. It enjoys an ideal location in The Latin Quarter, just around the corner from Quay Street and Galway's tourist and shopping hub.
