We always had dogs when I was growing up. My parents still have a dog and my children love spending time with him. And although we do have him when they go away, much to their disgust, I have resisted their pleas to get a dog of our own. Our current agreement is that if they are still living at home by the time they are 30, they can get a dog. You may laugh but this might not be beyond the realms of possibility!

As parents we are always concerned about healthy eating for example, looking for ways to cut down on sugar and fat in our diets, and those of our kids. Everything in moderation is usually what I aim for, where the children are concerned anyway, as I feel restricting my children’s intake too much leads them to crave more of what is not good for them. Now if only I could practice what I preach.
Parties are the exception, you can offer healthy alternatives but it is ok to have some sweet treats too. If you decide to have party bags to give each child as an added bonus once the party is over, it can be tricky deciding what to fill them with.

It can be fun to get the kids involved. Children are natural gardeners because they are curious, like to learn by doing, and love to play in the dirt. Gardening also gets them outdoors and gives them a sense of responsibility. Even if you don’t have green fingers yourself you can still encourage your children to enjoy gardening.

Spring has arrived, the days are getting brighter and for many of us, it is a time to get the house in order after the winter months. De-cluttering is the best way to cut down on mess and get your home looking organised, tidy and clean. However, if like me you are a bit of a hoarder, a good tip is to think, do I need this or is it useful for me or my family now? Asylum seekers and their children have spent years living in an institutional setting that was designed as a short-term solution. They are accommodated by the State in residential institutions, under a reception system known as Direct Provision. Direct Provision is intended to provide for the welfare of asylum seekers and their families as they await decisions on their asylum application. It ‘directly provides’ essential services, medical care, accommodation, and board with three meals a day provided at set times. When the the system was established in 2000, it was described as an interim solution to the high numbers of asylum seekers entering the State in search of protection, and the growing concerns about the risk of homelessness for that population. More than 15 years later, little has changed in the physical conditions, supports, or treatment of asylum seekers while they remain in these centres.
