The habits and opinions of Ireland’s workforce have been revealed in research carried out by Irish Life. The research found that 77 per cent of the Irish workforce believe they deserve more money for the job they do, while four in 10 people think that they could do a better job than their boss. The research was published to mark the launch of Irish Life EMPOWER, an improved workplace pension plan.

The research highlighted some amusing workplace truths for Irish people. Nearly a third of employees said that they have had an ‘office crush’ and over a fifth of respondents admitted to having an ‘office romance’ at some point in their careers.

Q: If I have a job interview on a Tuesday and another (more preferred) interview on a Wednesday how should I handle it if the Tuesday interview results in an offer on the spot? Should I accept the first offer and then decline it if the second one becomes available? Would this put the first offer in jeopardy? I certainly wouldn’t want to insult anyone and appear to be hedging my bets (even though that’s what I would be doing). Any suggestions? Thanks. (JM, email).

German company phenox GmbH is to establish a medical device manufacturing facility in Galway, creating up to 65 jobs over five years.The development is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through IDA Ireland.phenox Ireland Ltd. will manufacture interventional neurovascular medical devices for the treatment of aneurysms and stroke.

The company’s products are used by endovascular specialists for the interventional treatment of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and include mechanical thrombectomy devices, flow diverters and bifurcation aneurysm implants as well as access and support devices.

The recent success of EssentialSkillz in world markets was recognised by Deloitte in their Technology Fast 50 Awards for 2015. The awards, according to Deloitte, demonstrate the strength of the indigenous technology sector in Ireland. Cumulatively, the 2015 Fast 50 winners generated approximately €480 million in total annual revenues in 2014. The average revenue of companies featuring on the ranking was €9.5 million, while the average growth rate of the companies over the last four years was 540%.

Gift and inheritance tax update

It was encouraging to hear the Minister for Finance announce in his recent Budget speech an increase in the tax free threshold on gifts or inheritances from parents to children. The threshold now stands at €280,000 (increase of €55,000) with effect from 14 October 2015.

Generally, gift or inheritance tax (collectively known as Capital Acquisitions Tax “CAT”) will only apply where the ‘lifetime threshold’ has been exceeded. The ‘lifetime threshold’ varies with the degree of relationship between the donor and the recipient of a gift or inheritance.

Irish shoppers set to spend €1.59bn this Christmas

Irish shoppers are set to spend an estimated €1.59 billion on Christmas this year, according to new research by ecommerce partner Webloyalty.

The research into Christmas spending estimates that overall consumer spending will be up 2.8 per cent year-on-year, with each consumer spending an average of €435 on all aspects of Christmas 2015. Of the €1.59bn set to be spent on the festive season, some €871m will go on Christmas gifts, with the average spend per person on gifts being €273. However, 16 per cent claim they will spend more than €500 on Christmas presents alone.
