Glennon's footballers defeat Westmeath to set up semi-final clash with Dublin

Galway Ladies will face All Ireland champions Dublin in the Lidl NFL division one final after defeating Westmeath 0-13 to 0-7 in Mullingar on Sunday.

Football manager Stephen Glennon was pleased with his side's result which ensured Galway's progress to the semi-finals where they will face Dublin on May 22 at a time and venue to be confirmed.

However, Glennon admits his charges will need to improve the next day out if they are to defeat the current All-Ireland champions.

"It was a tough and scrappy game against Westmeath," he says. "They are a tough side to break down and we made too many mistakes over the hour.

"We know we can produce a much better performance, and we will need to tidy up aspects of our game if we are going to win the semi-final."

Roisín Leonard from Corofin was back in the starting line up for Galway and hit 0-2 from play in the 40 minutes of action she played.

Leonard, who hit 9-29 in last year's league, is only coming back from injury and the management team needed to give her some game time to ease her back to match fitness.

She has seen action now against Dublin, Cork and Westmeath and will hopefully be back to a full 60 minutes of action in the next few weeks.

Early scores from Leonard, Mairead Seoighe, and team captain Tracey Leonard left the sides level after the first quarter, and then four points, including efforts from impressive midfielder Olivia Divilly and two from Corofin's Leanne Coen, gave Galway a solid 0-7 to 0-3 interval lead.

Tracey Leonard, who ended the tie with four points, was on target twice in the second half, while Moycullen's youngster Ailbhe Davoren and substitute Emma Reaney, with a super score from distance, made sure they would be in the last four of the league.

It was a solid display by the Galway women considering they are still without two of their best players in midfielders, Catriona Cormican and Louise Ward, who are both still struggling with injuries.

Others who caught the eye in the victory were Sarah Lynch, 2017 All-Star nominee Sinead Burke, and tall wing-forward Áine McDonagh, who has been in super form recently.

The team management of Michael Comer, Ciara Moran, Noel Kelly, Tim Rabbitte and Glennon will be hoping their side can now up the tempo and take down the All-Ireland champions to reach a league final.

"We have huge competition on the panel with lots of girls vying for slots around the middle, and loads of contenders for the full-forward line especially. If we can get our injured players back to full fitness and keep everyone else injury free, we believe we would be a match for anyone come championship.

"We defeated Dublin in the league earlier this year in Abbotstown, which was their first defeat since the All-Ireland final, and there was only a few points between us last year - so if we play to our potential, we are hopeful of a win."

Mayo will face Cork in the other semi-final.

The Galway and Dublin clash is expected to be in a venue such as Birr, Tullamore or Portlaoise.
