Galway Coalition to Repeal joins the National Together For Yes Campaign

The Galway Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment is to join the National Together For Yes Campaign, and form the Galway Together For Yes Campaign, ahead of the upcoming referendum.

Together For Yes, launched last week in Dublin, is the national civil society campaign to repeal the Eighth Amendment from the Constitution. Regional offshoots of the group have formed across the State, including in Galway.

"We're delighted to be part of the National Together for Yes campaign" states Galway Together For Yes co-convener Sharon Nolan. "Galway Together For Yes is made up of many different organisations who are still part of our coalition model. Together we are campaigning for a more compassionate Ireland that provides abortion care for those who need it."

The 36th Constitutional Amendment Bill is being discussed in the Seanad this week. If passed, it will lead to the referendum commission being set up and the date of the referendum finally being confirmed. "We're eager to have a date finally confirmed for this referendum," says Galway Together For Yes spokesperson Lorraine Grimes. "We are still working towards May 25 as the provisional day while awaiting the Bill passing the Oireachtas. In the meantime, we're organising across Galway city and county with leafleting, training, events and volunteer recruitment".

Galway Together For Yes is to be formally launched and will hold a public meeting in The Kitchen Cafe, Galway City Museum, on April 11 from 8pm. It will also host a family fun day in the coming weeks. See www.repeal8galway.com
