Lower back pain is a common problem in the world today. Upwards of 80 per cent of the population will experience lower back pain at some point in their lives.
A common type of lower back pain experienced is termed sciatica. Sciatica refers to pain related to the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve originates in the lower back and passes through the buttocks down the back of the leg. Pain involving the sciatic nerve can be felt in the buttocks, down the back of the leg, or even in the foot.
Sciatic nerve irritation can also cause numbness, tingling, weakness, cramping, burning, or changes in reflexes of the lower extremity. While the symptoms experienced are similar there are numerous causes to sciatic pain including: piriformis syndrome, arthritis, disc bulge or herniation, stenosis, scoliosis, or spondylosis. The severity of sciatica varies from patient to patient, ranging from minor discomfort to a debilitating condition.
If you or anyone you know experiences sciatica, chiropractic care is a safe and very effective way to manage this condition. Having a chiropractor perform a focused history and physical examination will determine what is causing the symptoms, and from there the chiropractor will perform a treatment protocol to take the pressure off the sciatic nerve with a series of hands-on adjustments, tissue therapies, home exercises, and lifestyle modifications.
