Connemara premiere for Murdair Mhám Trasna

Docu-drama on infamous 1882 murders and trail to be screened in Indreabhán

MURDAIR MHÁM Trasna, a feature length docu-drama on the slaying of a family in Connemara, and subsequent wrongful convictions and executions of innocent people, will be screened in County Galway next week.

Murdair Mhám Trasna, based on the book Éagóir, by Seán Ó Cuirreáin, and produced by Ciarán Ó Cofaigh, will be screened in Seanscoil Sailearna, Indreabhán, on Thursday February 22 at 8.15pm.

The film centres on the brutal slaying in 1882 of a family of five in the remote village of Mám Trasna in Joyce Country, which led to the conviction of innocent people, the hanging of some, and the imprisonment of others as a result of perjured evidence and bribery. As the miscarriage of justice began to unfold, and perjury was admitted, the then British government, led by William Gladstone, refused to allow a public inquiry, which contributed to the fall of that government in 1885.
