Galway city to get close to €10 million for flood protection measures

Funding of €9.5 million is to be provided to Galway for protection works against flooding, as well as for works on the city’s waterways. The funding has been allocated by Minister of State for the Office of Public Works, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran.

A total of €9 million will go towards a major flood risk scheme for the Claddagh/Docks/Spanish Arch area, as well as Salthill, which is part of the Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management Programme. A total of €494,000 will go towards the city’s waterways, to enable City Hall to undertake comprehensive works at the Distillery Canal and Sruffaunacashlaun Stream, involving dredging, desilting measures, clearing overgrown trees and vegetation, and replacement of screens designed to catch debris.

The Minister for Community Development, Natural Resources, and Digital Development, and Fine Gael Galway West TD, Seán Kyne TD has welcomed the funding. He said the works are “essential if we are to tackle the flooding which Galway experiences”.
