Focus on You - Adult Learning Event Engage ’18.

Are you are interested in upskilling or changing career? Are you unsure about what study options to take? Do you need some career advice? Then the Engage ’18 event on Saturday, 27 January may be just what you need to kick-start your career in 2018. Taking place at the Connaught Hotel from 10 – 1, this one stop shop career event gives you the opportunity to engage with career consultants, educational providers and employers in the Galway region.

Hosted by the Regional Skills Forum West, “for the second year running this unique event brings together further and higher education providers. Representatives from Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board, NUI Galway and GMIT are available on the day to discuss career options, apprenticeships and support services for adult learners”, highlights Claire Hurley, Regional Skills Forum West Manager.

“Engage ’18 offers an exciting opportunity to see what all Education and Training institutions are offering with regards to enhancing you. As our economy is growing, numerous opportunities exist for you, as our engagement with employers ensures that the education and training programmes on offer in GRETB are employment focused with clear progression pathways to higher education”, Eithne Nic Dhonnchadha, Director of Further Education and Training, Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board.

Along with the opportunity to attend informative career talks and meet with industry experts, you will have the opportunity to arrange a one-to-one consultation with a Career Counsellor on the day. “These sessions, which are free of charge, will be provided on the day on a first come first served basis. Each consultation will focus on the individual’s personal work and education history and will explore future study and career options with the assistance of a qualified Career Counsellor”, advises Bridie Killoran, Guidance Counsellor, GMIT.

“By reviewing what your current skills and interests are, our advisors can explore learning pathways with you which can help you achieve your goals in either work or study”, explains Nuala McGuinn, Director, Centre for Adult Learning and Professional Development at NUI Galway.

Representatives from GRETB Apprenticeships team will be also be on hand on the day with information on the full range of over 40 apprenticeships/traineeships available in a range of sectors including Construction, Electrical, Engineering, Finance, IT, Hospitality and Motor Sectors.

Employers also play an important part of the event, with representatives from key industry sectors attending on the day. These include Medical Devices, Construction, Hospitality/Tourism, Business and Sales, Creative Arts, Information Technology, Entrepreneurship, Finance and Accounting and the Healthcare and Social Impact fields. They will provide careers advice on the various roles and career options in their area, making this a perfect opportunity to hear first-hand about job categories and the specific skill sets that these sectors are actively looking for. “Meeting people who work every day in these industries provides a valuable insight for adults who are either seeking work or considering a career move”, outlines Siobhán Brangwyn, Adult Guidance Counsellor with GRETB Adult Guidance and Information Service.
