More than €55,000 is to be invested in the Cappagh Park sports facility, Knocknacarra, under the regional sports capital programme, Deputy Hildegarde Naughton has announced.
Deputy Naughton said; “Cappagh is presently home to Knocknacarra FC and Knocknacarra GAA, among other organisations, and this Government funding will ensure that work on the all-weather sports court can proceed.
“With a population in excess of 12,000, and growing, it is essential that Knocknacarra and surrounding areas have the sporting facilities they need. It is not sustainable to merely build houses without the requisite local infrastructure, including sporting outlets. The Government recognise this and are committed to improving regional infrastructure throughout the country.
“This is an extremely important scheme that seeks to develop sport and recreation facilities in regions throughout the country. It enhances communities both socially and in terms of infrastructure, as well as improving facilities for our current and future sports stars.
“The purpose of this regional funding is to assist voluntary and community organisations, national governing bodies [NGBs] of sport, local authorities, and schools to develop high quality, safe, well-designed, sustainable facilities in appropriate locations, and to provide appropriate equipment to help maximise participation in sport and physical recreation.”
