Solidarity (the left alternative ) has announced the selection of Jessy Ní Cheallaigh as its candidate for the upcoming election.
Ms Ní Cheallaigh was unanimously selected to represent Solidarity in Galway West -South Mayo at a selection convention held in Galway city centre on Thursday December 14.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Conor Burke (local activist and organiser with Solidarity ) said; “It is my great pleasure to put forward and support the nomination of Jessy as our candidate. Jessy has been a leading activist in the movement to repeal the eighth amendment and for women’s bodily autonomy.
“Her support and activism on a number of key issues including the fight against homelessness, environmental protection, mental health, LGBTQ rights, and workers rights, particularly young workers who face growing levels of exploitation through precarious working conditions and lower rates of pay than previous generations make Jessy the ideal candidate as she embodies the goals and values that Solidarity represent”
Ms Ní Cheallaigh said; “I am delighted and honoured to be selected as the election candidate for Solidarity in Galway. Politics has always been very important to me and I am so grateful for this platform to empower and inspire people to take an interest in some of the keys issues I will be covering that are very close to my heart.
“I see the opportunity for real change in Galway, and I feel that I have the capability to ignite this change. I am going to give it my all, to try build a fairer and better society, not just for those who can afford it, but for the many, the 99 per cent. Ní neart go cur le chéile.”
