No respite for Wegians

t was a case of déjà vu for Galwegians on Saturday when they went down to a second consecutive defeat at the hands of Highfield in their return fixture in Cork in UBL Division 2A.

After a poor start in which they conceded two tries in the opening 10 minutes, Wegians took control of the half. However their inability to execute close to the line proved their undoing, and they settled for a penalty from outhalf Morgan Codyre to open their account on 30 minutes.

When the hosts scored a third try, any chance of regaining a foothold was dashed, particularly after Wegians spurned another chance before the break, leaving the gap 21-3 at half-time.

Wegians were not helped with the loss of two front-row forwards, and when the hosts bagged their fourth try soon after the restart, they led by 28-3.

With the game effectively over, it became very scrappy with a high error count. Highfield captain Miah Cronin latched onto a botched Wegian lineout in their own 22 to slide over for his side’s fifth try, and in the final play, Wegians' outhalf Codyre made an intercept near halfway to run under the posts for a consolation try for the visitors, marking a seventh straight defeat.
