“We are aware that you will be making plans for the Christmas in the days and weeks ahead, so that you might consider factoring it into your plans if you and your colleagues and staff would be interested in it organising a Christmas Jumper Charity day on Friday December 15.

“Christmas Jumper Day for Africa’ will be an opportunity for you to have fun, raise awareness and do some fundraising to support families – but living in some of the poorest communities in Africa,” said Ronan Scully.

“The main focus of ‘Christmas Jumper Day for Africa’ will be on encouraging children and people to come to school or work or play on the day wearing their favourite jumper or Christmas jumper or Christmas colours and make a donation to the charity. Old jumpers and old coloured clothes or maybe design your own Christmas jumper from old jumpers would be best for the children to wear or design as we don’t want to put expense on families in having to buy new jumpers,” he added.

Participating schools, businesses, clubs and companies will be invited to submit their favourite photos from the day – and the best image of an individual, class group or entire school or entire company - as chosen by top freelance photographer Andrew Downes will receive a special prize from the charity.

Gorta Self Help Africa will post some of the best photographs with the school’s permission on the website.

“We will provide you with some fundraising resources and suggestions to help you to arrange some Christmas-themed activities on the day – and in return, are asking participating children and people to bring along €2 or €5 to support ‘Christmas Jumper Day for Africa’.
