Maree basketballers have given themselves a huge confidence boost after winning their first men’s Super League fixture since promotion from division one.
Maree finally made the breakthrough with a 102-100 win over DCU Saints in Oranmore last weekend, with Irish international star Eoin Rockall grabbing 36 points. And with solid performances from Enda Walsh, Kenneth Hansberry (17 ), and American Jamelle Tolliver (16 ), the home side sealed a deserved victory.
Moycullen now travel to Dublin looking to build on this victory, and have a great opportunity when they face KUBS, a side yet to get a win this season.
Head coach John Finn says his side "matched up well against DCU".
“We have basically set ourselves up for the past few games, so that when we got a game that was close, we would actually win it. I think tactically, we got it right.
“It has taken us too long to get to the pace of the Super League. I think this game had players shooting well on both teams, so it was a high scoring game.”
Finn says the challenge now is the maintain the momentum.
“Our point-guard Eoin Rockall had a fantastic game offensively, and we had really good displays from quite a few others as well. We will just look at next week's game now and try to keep the momentum going.”
Although Maree were down by eight at half-time, they knew they were within striking distance, and produced great fourth quarter offensive which was crucial.
Mystics
Meanwhile in the women's Super League, NUIG Mystics came so close to grabbing their first win, but fell to Pyrobel Killester by six points, 67-61 in Galway.
It is the fifth match this season which the Mystics have lost by just six points or less.
“Mystics' record doesn’t really reflect how good they are,” said Killester’s Karl Kilbride.
