SHE TAUGHT Leonard Cohen the art of songwriting; featured The Kinks and Led Zeppelin's lead guitarist Jimmy Page on her BBC TV show in the 1960s; and despite being a Californian, The Times called her "Britain's First Lady of Folk".
Folk singer-songwriter Julie Felix plays Monroe's Live tomorrow night at 8pm on a bill which also features rising Irish singer SON (aka Susan O'Neill ).
Leaving the US at a young age, and travelled Europe. During a trip to Greece she met Leonard Cohen and showed him how to arrange his poems into songs. She arrived in Britain in 1964, releasing her debut album and single on Decca - which was also the Rolling Stones label. The following year, she became the first folksinger to fill the Royal Albert Hall, while from 1967 to 1970 she hosted her own shows for the BBC, Once More With Felix, where she duetted with Cohen. She was also one the bill for the 1970 Isle Of Wight festival.
Her most famous song is 'Going To The Zoo', and she had British hit singles with 'If I Could (El Condor Pasa )' and 'Heaven is Here'. Close to 80, she continues to go strong and earlier this year released the live album, In The Spotlight.
