Local athlete on her way to World Championships

Michelle Guthrie will be going to the inaugural World Strongest Games in North Carolina on December 16 to 17 after being crowned All Ireland Strongest Woman.

The Galway based strongwoman set a new Irish deadlift record for lightweight strongwoman at the championships held at the end of September.

In total more than 250 athletes will be competing from all corners of the globe and Guthrie, who trains out of Galway Strength and Performance, says she is absolutely thrilled to be going to be representing Ireland in the lightweight category against 30 other competitors. “This is a massive accomplishment for me and something I am thrilled to be considered for.”

The sport is not sponsored so the bill of travelling and competing in the USA is placed solely on the athletes.

Guthrie says; “The trip is 100 per cent funded by each athlete and with flights accommodation and competition alone ringing up to over €2,000 so I am hoping to fundraise a proportion of the expenses from the generosity of the local community around me.

“I will be hosting have two fundraising table quizzes (four people per team €40 per table ) in Greenes Bar Ballyvaughan, Co Clare, on Friday November 10 at 9pm, and Crowes Bar, Bohermore, Galway, on Tuesday November 14 at 8pm.”

The Clare native who has lived in Galway since 2005, will also be holding a raffle thanks to the backing of local businesses.

“Local businesses have already been very supportive to me donating spot prizes for the night so I will be holding a raffle as well. I will also be holding an online raffle for a lucky winner to receive a six week training plan from Brian Keane Fitness valued at €200.”
