Flights, camera, action — council invites tenders to make Galway Airport a movie hub

Turning the former Galway Airport into a film and TV production site will be “hugely positive for” and “help create a cluster” the creative sector in the West of Ireland.

This is the view of the Minister for Community Development, Natural Resources and Digital Development, and Fine Gael Galway West TD, Seán Kyne, who has welcomed the decision by the Galway city and county councils to press ahead with the use of the airport facilities for film/TV production. The local authorities will also be inviting a tender for expressions of interest for the management of facilities at Carnmore.

“The use of facilities at the former airport, including two hangers, will greatly help the expansion of film and TV production in Galway with spin-off benefits for the creative sector and the wider local economy,” said Minister Kyne. “We are fortunate to have a vibrant creative sector in the West, including the strong independent production sector supported by TG 4 among other local media outlets.”
