Brothers Martin and Diarmuid Mulkerrins from the Moycullen Handball Club feature in the second series of All-Ireland handball finals at Croke Park on Saturday.
Both are also bidding for their second titles of the softball season. The younger Mulkerrins, Diarmuid, clinched a thrilling victory in the minor singles at headquarters three weeks ago, while Martin secured senior status when he and partner Pat Conway from Williamstown won the won the All-Ireland 60x30 intermediate doubles title in Limerick last week with a hard-earned 21-19, 21-13 victory against Cork duo Michael Hedigan and Daniel Relihan,
Saturday’s showcase finals gets underway at 3pm with the minor doubles in which Diarmuid Mulkerrins teams up with Cian Ó Conghaille for a testing encounter with Tipperary duo James Prentice and Jerome Cahill. Mulkerrins beat Prentice in three tough games to secure the singles and hopes are high the Galway duo can deliver the doubles on Saturday.
Older brother Martin takes on John Paul O’Connor from Limerick in the intermediate singles final as the second match of the afternoon card at headquarters. On paper he should be well capable of taking the title, thus completing a perfect year in the 60x30 code.
