Hurling championship hots up

Two senior hurling championship games are down for decision this Sunday in Kenny Park to determine which of the teams that finished second and third in the senior B groups advance to the preliminary quarter-finals.

Clarinbridge take on Athenry at 3pm, and at 4.30pm Tynagh Abbey Duniry face off against Killimordaly to see which teams will be entering the last 12 teams left in championship 2017.

When those preliminary quarter-finals take place is a subject of much debate due to the appeal that has been lodged against Turloughmore’s use of an alleged illegal player in their game against Portumna earlier in the season.

As a result the Galway championship could be at a standstill for a few weeks as Turloughmore are in the process of appealing the board’s decision with an imminent appearance before the Connacht Council.

It has also been speculated during the week that Turlough will bring their case to the Disputes Resolution Authority should the Connacht Council uphold the county CCC’s decision.

However, the above four teams who are in championship action this Sunday will not be worrying about any appeals process at the moment. They will be keen to grab the chance to extend their championship season for another few weeks. A win for either club will see them go into the last 12 teams still standing.

Athenry enjoyed a comprehensive victory last weekend, beating Ahascragh-Fohenagh by 20 points, 3-20 to 0-9, to leapfrog Moycullen who were beaten by Kilnadeeman-Leitrim 2-21 to 1-17.

A win last Sunday would have seen Moycullen third in the Senior B group two table instead of fourth.

Clarinbridge, too, will also be entering the game with some degree of confidence after finishing their group games with a narrow 1-14 to 2-10 win over Ardrahan.

Both Tynagh Abbey Duniry and Killimordaly also won their final group games last weekend, with TAC beating Beagh by 2-13 to 0-15, and Killimordaly having a narrow victory over Abbeyknockmoy on a scoreline of 0-20 to 1-16.
