UHG to offer insulin pump therapy for under-sixes shortly

University Hospital Galway is in the process of appointing a paediatric endocrinologist.

Interviews are taking place this month and when the position is filled, the facility will be able to deliver insulin pump therapy for under sixes with diabetes.

In a statement, the hospital pointed out that all children with diabetes are cared for and managed locally in the hospital and that has always been standard practice.

“If it is considered clinically suitable for a child under six to have insulin pump therapy then they are presently referred to University Hospital Limerick for the initiation of that treatment.

“If a child under six is not suitable for insulin pump therapy; they are managed locally in UHG with their standard subcutaneous insulin regimen by the local paediatric diabetes team: consultants, paediatric clinical nurse specialists and diabetes advanced nurse practitioner.”
