Canney welcomes flood works funding

East Galway TD Seán Canney has this week welcomed the allocation of over €60,000 for minor flood works across East Galway.

The money has been allocated by the Office of Public Works to Galway County Council for projects in Loughrea, Caltra and Tuam. €45,000 has been allocated for the installation of a new culvert system in Ballinakill, Loughrea.

Two headwalls and a culvert are to be installed at Creaiguenavaddoge, Caltra, at a cost of €14,940 and a flood defence wall and flap valve are to be installed at Kilcloghans, Tuam, at a cost of €3,650.

“Low cost engineering solutions, when properly planned and executed, can provide solutions to many localised flooding problems and I welcome the announcement of these three projects in Loughrea, Caltra and Tuam,” he said, adding that he will continue to highlight projects in east Galway to the OPW and seek the approval of minor works schemes.

“These three schemes, with a price tag of over €60,000, are a welcome investment in the flood infrastructure of the county and I hope that they can be progressed as soon as possible by Galway County Council,” he said.

Celebrate the ‘Great Irish Garden’ at Irish Seed Savers

Every year, as part of National Heritage Week, the Irish Seed Savers host their biggest open day of the year at Irish Seed Savers in East Clare. This year proves to be no exception and on Sunday August 27 Irish Seed Savers are inviting everyone to visit their orchards and gardens to celebrate ‘The Great Irish Garden’.

Entry includes free talks, tours and gardening demonstrations. Guest speakers this year are RTE presenter and environmentalist Duncan Stewart, Brown Envelope Seeds founder Madeline McKeever and renowned Organic Gardening guru Jim Cronin. Each will be highlighting the need for biodiversity, heritage, and conservation and best organic practices.

There is something for the beginner and avid gardeners alike, and weather permitting, there will be a children’s treasure hunt and face painting. On the day they will have a special menu in their cafe and their Cob Pizza Oven will be fired up. Come visit, learn about our vital conservation work or just come for the atmosphere, food and fun.

With over twenty acres of organic seed gardens, native woodland trails and heritage orchards it’s going to be an enjoyable day for all.

All funds raised from the day go directly back into our vital conservation.
