An estimated one million Swedes are to see Galway, the Aran Islands, and Connemara on their TV screens when popular Swedish TV show Go'kvall broadcasts three episodes shot along the 'Wild Atlantic Way'.
Go'kvall is a daily lifestyle programme on Sveriges Television. The three episodes featuring Galway are set to air during autumn and winter 2018, with viewing figures expected to reach the one million mark - a tenth of the population of the Nordic kingdom.
The programme's television crew, in Galway as guests of Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland, recorded footage at Cnoc Suain, An Spidéal; Dún Aonghasa in Inis Mór; recorded segments with local guide Sheena Dignam, bodhrán-maker Malachy Kearns from Roundstone Music & Crafts, and met roots/folk/Americana trio The Whileaways.
"We have seen good growth in visitor numbers from the Nordic region so far this year," said Aileen Hickey, Tourism Ireland manager for the Nordic Region, "with the most recent CSO figures for March to May showing an increase of +5.6 per cent – an extra 3,500 Nordic visitors compared with the same three-month period last year.”
