Method statements for the N59 Bunakill to Maam Cross ground investigation works have been approved by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, allowing them to go to tender.
Further method statements will be necessary before the construction phase can go ahead. However the development has been welcomed by Fine Gael Galway West TD and Minister for Community Development, Natural Resources, and Digital Development, Seán Kyne.
"This work is necessary to allow for detailed project design and for the construction phase of the project to progress," he said. "It is an important step as it allows the ground investigation works to take place to determine rock and ground type which are necessary for design works."
Meanwhile work is progressing on the design of an upgrade west of Letterfrack, near the national park, which is particularly narrow. Works on resurfacing are progressing on a continuous 6.7 km section of the N59 west from Oughterard.
