GALWAY RIOT grrrls, feminists, punk music aficionados, and everyone in between, is invited to the Galway Feminist Collective's fundraising screening of The Punk Singer - a powerful documentary on musician and Third Wave Feminist icon Kathleen Hanna.
The Punk Singer, made in 2013 and directed by Sini Anderson, charts the personal and artistic life of Kathleen Hanna; her importance within the US punk scene; her leading of the bands Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and The Julie Ruin; her battle against Lyme disease; and how she has been an inspiration to at least two generation s of young feminists.
The documentary will be screened in The Cellar at 7pm this Thursday [June 15]. The screening is the main event at the night which will also see a short documentary made by Galway Feminist Collective member Aine Ní Threinir, centring on feminism and punk music in the Balkans, as well as a discussion on women in punk and the arts.
"The Riot Grrrl movement is all about finding creative DIY ways to express what it's like to be a woman and/or queer in this world - especially in response to mainstream arts and society that either ignores us, does not get us, or misrepresents us," says Galway Feminist Collective member Aine Ní Threinir. "Both the film and movement are very inspiring and encouraging."
Suggested donation for attending the event is €3 to €5. All funds raised will go towards the F Word: Feminist Festival from July 5 to 9. The festival will include a discussion around 'Decolonising Feminism', hosted by Galway Anti-Racism Network; workshops on 'Being Trans and Feminist' with Amach!; a workshop on violence against women, hosted by Domestic Violence Response; an evening of sean-nós singing and traditional music.
