A warm and welcoming tropical paradise, Mauritius lies in the inviting waters of the Indian Ocean. A country rich in history, having first being colonised in 1638, it has a fascinating blend of cultures, traditions, customs, and cuisine.
English is the official language but you will hear some French and Creole when you are out and about.
Lying 2,400 kilometres off the south east coast of Africa, Mauritius has over 160km of coastline and is surrounded by coral reefs and glorious beaches. Mauritius offers a unique blend of African, Indian, and European influences that can be seen through its food, its people, and its culture.
Apart from the south coast, the island is surrounded by coral reefs, making it an enticing playground for divers and water sports enthusiasts. Diving, windsurfing, snorkelling, and sailing are just some of the popular activities. Exploring the markets of Port Louis, and a helicopter trip to discover the amazing mountain ranges, gorges, valleys, and beaches, are just some of the highlights to experience.
We stayed in the amazing five star Heritage Awali Hotel, which is located on the south coast of the island. Combining classical charm with contemporary chic, the Heritage draws on the African elegance and lifestyle to offer an unforgettable stay. The hotel offers an amazing kids' club and exclusive access to a private beach club. The all inclusive package includes a wide choice of food, an extensive drinks menu, and watersports. They also include a spa treatment in the fabulous Seven Colour Spa. The hotel caters for everyone from honeymooners to families to people looking for a golfing holiday.
I was truly taken aback by the beauty of this island. For the friendly welcome by the locals, along with some of the best cuisine I have ever had, Mauritius will remain a favourite of mine with a hope to return there again with my family.
