Galway to celebrate Africa Day today

Today is Africa Day and is a day for Galwegians and the city’s African community to celebrate and experience each other’s culture and to stimulate exchange between different music traditions.

Africa Day is an initiative of Irish Aid to recognise and acknowledge the African diaspora living in Galway. The Galway City Council is the implementing body of this initiative. Africa Day is also an international event, commemorating the May 25 1963 foundation of the Organisation of African Unity.

Events will take place today from 2pm in the United Methodist Presbyterian Church, beside the Victoria Hotel. SONKE, Galway’s multicultural choir will perform and host an interactive singing workshop of African songs.

Also taking part are AN ANU, a duo of Liam Mac Amhaila and Helen Webb, who fuse world music with Irish culture and mythology. Helen is an acclaimed international singer and artist and plays the kora, flute, piano and guitar. She is also the musical director of SONKE. Liam is a singer-songwriter and guitarist.

Admission is free and all are welcome. Refreshments will be offered.
