YOUTH BALLET West marks it's 10th year in existence with a gala performance in the Town Hall Theatre that will draw from many of its most popular shows, as well as the world premiere of the new work - A Tribute to Haydn.
The gala takes place on Saturday May 13 at 7pm and Sunday 14 at 5pm, and will feature the crazy Tea-Party from Alice Underground; go back to the 1950s from Teenage Kicks; Paddy Casey’s ‘Whatever Gets You True’ from Strings; showcase the company's classical ballet training with 'Friends’ from Coppelia; Kitri’s glamorous variation from Don Quixote; excerpts from Swan Lake; and the world premiere of artistic director Judith Sibley’s new work A Tribute to Haydn, a homage both to the composer and to the art of classical ballet.
The gala will see several other new works created by Sibley and members of the company, including a fusion of contemporary and Irish dance in Theme from Green Bushes, raw emotion in Reflexions, the energy of Cats, and a tap number. For younger dance enthusiasts there is Once Upon a Time, a children's ballet featuring classic fairy tale characters.
"After losing our Arts Council support last year Youth Ballet West is delighted to have had it reinstated this year," said Judith Sibley.
YBW is one of only three ballet companies to be in receipt of Arts Council funding, the professional ballet company Ballet Ireland, the Irish National Youth Ballet, and Youth Ballet West, which Sibley founded 10 years ago with her sister Phyllis Hayes of the Corrib Dance Academy. The company is also supported by Galway City Arts Office and the Galway County Council.
