Walpurgis Night VI

Galway city's Doom Metal festival returns this weekend

THE NEW, the old, and the heaviest descend on Galway this weekend for the city's Doom Metal festival, Walpurgis Night VI, with gigs from Graveyard Dirt, Soothsayer, and Genuflection.

The festival begins on Saturday with a record fair in The Cellar Bar from 11am to 2pm (admission free ), followed by a 'warm-up gig' in the same venue from 5pm, featuring Tension Head and Between The Lines, and one more to be announced. Admission is €5.

The main event takes place on Sunday in The Loft, at Seven, Bridge Street, from 3pm, with a headline set from leading Irish doom metal band, Graveyard Dirt. Formed in 1994, the band supported Primordial and Mourning Beloveth, and re-emerged from a period of hiatus with the 2015 EP, My Scourge, My Plague.

Also playing are Genuflection, a new Galway sludge metal band featuring former members of Rites, but playing heavier, slower, and more demented than in their former band.

Also playing on Sunday include Belfast bands TOME, Owlcrusher (check their ‘The Spoiler’ recording on YouTube ), and So Much For The Sun; Galway bands Stonecarver and Ten Ton Slug; Cork black metallers Soothsayer, who have just released their second EP, At This Great Depth; Dublin's Weeping Ulcer; and Clare's Slung From A Tree.

Admission is €10. A two day pass is €13. The event is organised by Hexan Haus.
