Osteoporosis is a silent disease affecting one in two women and one in four men over the age of 50 in Ireland, although all age groups can be affected.
Osteoporosis is preventable and treatable at all stages, therefore it is important to address your bone health, especially if it is hereditary. There are usually no warning signs an individual has developed osteoporosis and it is often only diagnosed when a bone is fractured after even a minor fall. Loss of bone-building materials can occur as the body ages and is particularly prevalent among post-menopausal women.
During your consultation at Osteoporosis Clinic Ireland, Karen Byrne, registered general nurse, will review and explain your DEXA scan and provide an ultrasound bone density scan to monitor your progress on an ongoing basis. Susan Boland, nutritional therapist, will assess you, to develop personalised nutrition to meet your specific bone health needs. Helen Taylor, chartered physiotherapist, uses research in the development of your exercise programme which is designed to fit in with your lifestyle and individual requirements.
Follow up clinics are held at three months to review clients' progress and update their individual protocols. Ms Boland and Ms Byrne use the most up to date research in the development of their programmes. The team look forward to engaging with you on your journey to improving your bone health.
An Osteoporosis Clinic Ireland clinic will take place in Galway on April 25. For more information contact Susan Boland 086 8580500, Karen Byrne 087 2360877, email [email protected], or see www.osteoporosisclinicireland.com
