THE WORLD premiere of Woyzeck in Winter, a major new music theatre production, will take place in Galway as part of the Galway International Arts Festival 2017, after which the show transfers to London’s prestigious Barbican Centre.
Woyzeck in Winter, a co-production between the festival and Landmark Productions, will officially open on Monday July 17, with previews taking place from July 12 to 16. The show runs at the Black Box Theatre, Dyke Road, up to Sunday 23.
Starring acclaimed Frano-Irish singer Camille O'Sullivan, as well as Patrick O'Kane, Stephen Brennan, Barry McGovern, Peter Coonan, Susannah De Wrixon, Rory Nolan, and Shane O'Reilly, Woyzeck in Winter is a fusion of the Georg Büchner play Woyzeck, and Schubert's song cycle, Die Winterreise.
The works were written within 15 years of each other - the 24 songs of Die Winterreise in 1823/4, the 24 scenes of the play in 1836 - by artists who died young. Woyzeck, a poor soldier, earns extra money for his family through menial jobs and participation in bizarre medical experiments. Brutalised by society and consumed with jealousy, he is driven to the far side of alienation and despair – and finally to a desperate, violent, act.

"I think audiences have an absolute treat in store. Following the world premiere in Galway in July, Woyzeck in Winter will open the autumn season on the main stage at the Barbican. Woyzeck in Winter has been adapted and directed by Conall Morrison; with lyrics translated into English by Stephen Clark; musical direction by Conor Linehan; and choreography by Liz Roche. The show is suitable for ages 14 and over.
