NEVER JUDGE a book by its cover, or an EP for that matter. The sleeve of Field Trip's Evening's Over gives the impression this will be five tracks of slacker-rock and odes to student burn-out after one Buckfast too many.
From its opening keyboard vibes and gently picked, melodic, indie rock guitar of lead track 'Wait', to its explosion into quite/load dynamics and a vocal melody of sweet melancholy, it is obvious Field Trip are no slackers, but connoisseurs of the finest traditions of eighties and nineties indie and shoegaze.
Since their earliest incarnation as We Are Ruffians, the Galway band have, almost from the off, demonstrated a keen sense of melody and harmony, with a grasp of songwriting and arrangement it takes others years to master. All five tracks here display those qualities, and show the potential Field Trip have. Pick of the bunch though is 'Plant The Seed' - already a contender for Galway song of the year. With its irresistible chorus, it is a song Teenage Fanclub or The Pains of Being Pure At Heart in their prime (and both surely influences on Field Trip ) would have been very happy to write themselves.
