Sinn Féin City Cllr. Mairéad Farrell has, this morning, expressed her sadness at the death overnight of Martin McGuinness.
Cllr Farrell said “It is with deep sadness that I learned of Martin’s untimely death. It is a very sad day for Republicans across Ireland. Martin throughout his life put the interests of his community first. From the harrowing times of his youth facing up to the repression on the streets of Derry to embracing the peace process Martin McGuinness gave his all.
And even in his final days this was the case: he left his hospital bed to try and persuade the DUP leader Arlene Foster to seek a positive way forward out of the political logjam. Martin will be missed not just in the Six Counties, but on the whole island of Ireland and further afield. Ní bheidh a leithead ann arís.”
