Slick sticks and teamwork works best as Supermac's seal All Ireland victory

Supermac's created a new piece of history when, in their first season of Interfirms GAA, they were crowned All Ireland champions.

The Galway side claimed the All Ireland junior hurling title with a nine-point victory, 2-17 to 2-8, over Romoquip in Duggan Park.

After a confidence-boosting win over a fancied Limerick side in the semi-final, Supermac's produced another fine team performance, and although Romoquip asked questions throughout, Supermac's slicker stick work and teamwork were central to this success.

They led from start to finish and although it was not all one-way traffic, Supermac's never wavered at crucial stages.

They produced a lively start, and within three minutes Brian Concannon had found the net after a long delivery from Clement Earls. Romoquip’s scorer-in-chief Peadar Murray replied with a pointed free minutes later, but the Galway side maintained their momentum with a long-range point from David Concannon. Crucially Supermac's grabbed another goal after 12 minutes when evergreen Earls set up Tomas Hoban, who made no mistake from close range. And when Cathal Keane pointed again, Supermac's were seven clear approaching the end of the opening quarter.

However Romoquip got themselves back in the match two minutes later when Peadar Murray fired a free to the Supermac's net, and they quickly followed with a free to leave a goal between the sides after 18 minutes.

Although Earls steadied Supermac's with a free, the Offaly side once again reined in the lead, adding points in quick succession through Brian Kelly, who was winning a lot of ball inside, and Murray with a 65.

Eanna Ryan, with a fine solo effort, and Earls, exchanged points with Aidan Treacy and Murray, but evergreen Clement Earls had the last say of the half to leave his side four clear at the interval, 2-7 to 1-6.

Supermac's produced a blistering start to the second half, which really sealed the encounter. Earls, with two pointed frees, and fine efforts from Brian Concannon and Eanna Ryan extended the lead to eight points after 40 minutes.

Murray answered with Romoquip's first score of the half, but Supermac's continued to dominate. Tomas Hoban, after linking well with Eanna Ryan, added to the tally, and an Earls' free, and a Brian Concannon effort put Supermac's into a 10-point lead.

As expected the Offaly side refused to lie down, and when Murray struck a free and then finished a delivery from Aidan Treacy to the back of the net, the lead was cut to six with nine minutes remaining.

However, that was as good as it got for Romoquip as Supermac's finished with points from Earls and Dara Cooney, crowning another fine team performance from John McDonagh's charges with an All Ireland title in their debut season.
