CRESTFALL, AN early play by Mark O'Rowe, best known for scripting the films Intermission and Perrier's Bounty, will be staged as part of the 2017 Galway International Arts Festival.
Druid has announced it's programme of events for the year, which will also see a production of Eugene McCabe’s King Of The Castle, and a revival of Samuel Beckett's Waiting For Godot, one of the undoubted hits of last year's GIAF.
Crestfall is O’Rowe’s poetic drama about three women in a town on the edge of catastrophe. Directed by Annabelle Comyn, who directed last year's Helen and I, it will premiere at the Mick Lally theatre in Galway in July, before transferring to the Peacock at The Abbey in August.
In September, Druid will present Eugene McCabe’s epic play, King Of The Castle, directed by Garry Hynes. Seán McGinley will play the lead role of Scober McAdam, whose 'greed to succeed' is respected by the men he hires, but whose failures in the bedroom are mocked just as widely, leading Scober to make some disturbing choices.
“These are provocative plays and we’re living in provocative times” says Druid artistic director Garry Hynes. “Crestfall is an unforgiving portrait of three women fuelled by love, but driven to hate. It’s beautiful, but it pulls no punches. King Of The Castle is very much a play of its time steeped in a world of patriarchy and religion that invades the personal and the intimate. They present a challenge and a necessary look at where we are and where we’ve come from.”
Druid’s acclaimed production of Waiting for Godot runs at The Abbey Theatre from April 22 to May 20. Directed by Garry Hynes, it stars Garrett Lombard, Aaron Monaghan, Rory Nolan and Marty Rea. The production will also play at Spoleto Festival USA in June 2017.
